The dew point is the temperature the air needs to be cooled to (at constant pressure) in order to achieve a relative humidity (RH) of 100%. At this point the air cannot hold anymore water in the gas form. If the air were to be cooled even more, water vapor would have to come out of the atmosphere in the liquid form, usually as fog or precipitation.
The dew point is actually proportional to the amount of water vapor in a given parcel of air, so that an increasing dew point means there is a greater concentration of water vapor molecules
The dew point is always lower than (or equal to) the air temperature. If the air temperature cools to the dew point, or if the dew point rises to equal the air temperature, then dew, fog or clouds begin to form. At this point where the dew point temperature equals the air temperature, the relative humidity is 100%.
The dew point temperature is what causes dew to form on the grass in the morning. The morning, just before sunrise, is the lowest air temperature of the day, so it is the time when the dew point temperature is most likely to be reached.
Dew Point Definition. That said, the amount of moisture in the air is a very important aspect of our weather. Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air. We often describe the humidity as a percentage that is actually a ratio comparing the actual amount of water vapor in the air to the maximum amount of water vapor the air can hold.
The dew point temperature determines what combinations of temperature and RH will be possible in the storage environment. At a constant dew point, when the temperature goes up, the RH goes down and when the temperature goes down, the RH goes up.
